Meet Jennifer Doherty, LPC
In my years of practice, I've seen the same thing again and again. Behind so much anxiety, depression and addiction is an experience that never got the chance to heal. That's why trauma is at the heart of my work, and why I sought out training in Accelerated Resolution Therapy from the person who created it.
I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor in Connecticut and the founder of Turning Over a New Leaf. Since 2009, I've worked with people at every stage of recovery. That work has taken me through inpatient hospitals, long-term substance use programs, and intensive outpatient and partial hospitalization programs, and even into wilderness and yoga settings. That range taught me there's no single path to change. Treatment should fit the person, not the other way around.
I trained in ART directly with its founder, Laney Rosenzweig, and I'm also trained in EMDR. I've also completed training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), an evidence-based treatment that teaches practical skills for intense emotions and urges. Around that trauma work, I draw on DBT, CBT, ACT and motivational interviewing, plus mindfulness, meditation and yoga-informed practices when they help. My approach is holistic, person-centered and strength-based. Safety, choice and pacing always come first.
My background in yoga and work in wilderness settings showed me how much healing happens through the body. Movement, breath and paying attention to physical sensations can reach places that words alone sometimes can't. So sessions may include gentle movement, breathing practices, grounding exercises or mindful body awareness, woven together with ART and talk therapy. You're always in charge of what feels right for you.
I'm proud to be an affirming therapist for LGBTQ+ clients. I also have experience working with veterans, first responders, medical and legal professionals, and people in Hartford's insurance and finance fields. Many of them come to me because discretion matters in their line of work, and I take that seriously.
